Fulham appoints Álvaro Arbeloa as head coach
New leader at Craven Cottage
Fulham have confirmed the hiring of Álvaro Arbeloa to guide the Premier League side after Marco Silva moved to Benfica. The Spaniard signs a three‑year deal that will keep him at the club through the summer of 2029. Arbeloa replaces Silva, who spent five years at Fulham after leading the club back to the top flight and establishing it as a consistent mid‑table outfit. The appointment follows a thorough recruitment process in which Arbeloa convinced the hierarchy with his philosophy, coaching staff plans and long‑term vision.
Arbeloa’s coaching pedigree
Arbeloa, 43, climbed the ranks at Real Madrid, working his way from the academy to the reserve side before taking charge of the senior team for the final months of last season. He guided Madrid to a second‑place finish in La Liga and built an impressive Champions League campaign that saw them knock out Manchester City before falling to Bayern Munich. Prior to that, he steered the Under‑19 squad to a domestic and European treble, earning promotion to the Castilla line‑up. His success in youth and reserves paved the way for his interim spell with the first team.
Playing credentials and trophies
As a player, Arbeloa enjoyed a distinguished career with Liverpool, Real Madrid and Spain. He lifted two Champions League trophies, a La Liga title, the FIFA World Cup and two European Championships. His club journey ended with West Ham United in 2017 after spells at the previously mentioned sides. Those accolades on the pitch underscore his deep understanding of top‑level football.
Fulham’s vision and reaction
Owner Shahid Khan described Arbeloa as the standout candidate after a series of meetings throughout June, citing his ambition, attacking mindset and dedication to youth development. Tony Khan echoed the praise, highlighting Arbeloa’s football intelligence, work ethic and drive to succeed in the Premier League. Both executives believe the new boss is the right fit to take Fulham forward and maintain the progress made under Silva.
Upcoming season opener
Arbeloa is set to begin preparations for his first full campaign, with a competitive debut scheduled against Chelsea in the opening round of the new Premier League season. Notably, the Chelsea side will be managed by his former Real Madrid teammate Xabi Alonso, adding a familiar face to the start of his Fulham tenure. He has spoken of the excitement of meeting his new players, soaking up the atmosphere at Craven Cottage and launching pre‑season training.
