Hansi Flick Prioritizes Joao Cancelo for Barcelona Preseason
Flick has made it clear that signing Joao Cancelo is the top priority for Barcelona’s upcoming preparation. The Portuguese full‑back’s ability to play both flanks and provide an extra attacking outlet matches the tactical balance Flick wants to build. While the club continues its search for a new centre‑forward, securing Cancelo is the immediate focus.
Flick Wants Cancelo Ready for Preseason
The German coach has ordered sporting director Deco to accelerate negotiations following Portugal’s early exit from the 2026 World Cup. A deal between Barcelona and Al‑Hilal is already in place, valued at around €10 million in fixed and variable payments. Once the paperwork is finished, Cancelo will join Barcelona in time for the start of pre‑season training.

Cancelo’s prior stint at the Nou Camp means he already understands the club’s culture, which reduces the adaptation time needed for his integration. The 32‑year‑old is expected to start regularly on either side of the defense while also pushing forward when the attack needs an extra outlet. Having previously impressed during his first spell, the club views him as an automatic starter for Flick’s plans.

One Signature Away from Completion
Barcelona and Al‑Hilal have already settled on a package worth roughly €10 million, covering both fixed and variable portions of the fee. The only remaining hurdle is for Cancelo to sign his contract, after which the transfer will be finalized. This progression ensures that Flick will have the new full‑back ready for the club’s week‑long training camp in England.
With Cancelo secured, Barcelona can refocus on its ongoing hunt for a centre‑forward, a position that remains a priority in the rebuilding strategy. Flick’s confidence in the defensive ranks is now high, viewing the pending signing as the capstone of the squad’s overhaul.
