Northeast Augusta All Stars head to Florida for Regional

Justin Shifflett thought his all‑star team’s season was over after a third‑place finish in the state tournament. Then, the following Monday, June 29, he got a surprise phone call: the second‑place squad from Virginia could not attend the regional tournament in Florida because of a lack of participants. Officials asked if Shifflett’s club would step in as Virginia’s second representative.

Shifflett quickly dialed each family, asking if they could make the trip. All 12 families said yes, turning a potential disappointment into a sudden opportunity.

“It was a whirlwind,” Shifflett said. “I’m still trying to figure it out. It was wild, but it’s been an incredible experience.”

Tournament Schedule and Details

The Northeast Augusta Rookie League Machine Pitch squad will open play in the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Southeast Region on Wednesday, July 8, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Their first game is slated for 2 p.m. against Okeeheelee, followed by pool play through Friday, July 10. The eight‑team field will narrow to the top four for a single‑elimination bracket beginning Saturday, July 11.

“They’ve battled through adversity and anything you can imagine,” Shifflett said. “Being the underdogs, playing on fields they’ve never played on, rain delays, sitting in hot sun. They never gave up. They battled through every single game. It’s a phenomenal group of kids.”

Team Composition and Background

The roster features players who are 7 and 8 years old, drawn from Cassell and Wilson elementary schools. These youngsters have spent the season honing their skills under Shifflett’s guidance, preparing for the higher level of competition that a regional tournament brings.

Future of Machine Pitch in the League

This marks the final season for machine pitch at the Northeast Augusta Rookie League for this age group. Beginning next year, the league will transition entirely to coach pitch for 8U players. The machine is positioned 46 feet from home plate, and the ball is thrown at roughly 43 miles per hour.
