2025 MLB Home Run Derby Field Takes Shape
New AL Stars Join Contest
Two more American League stars have signed up for this year’s Home Run Derby. Royals first baseman/outfielder Jac Caglianone and Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras both entered the showcase on Wednesday. Caglianone revealed his father will serve as his pitching partner at Citizens Bank Park on Monday night.
Caglianone’s Rising Power
The Royals’ young power hitter posted an Instagram update saying, “Excited to be a part of this year’s Home Run Derby! Pops and I can’t wait! See y’all in Philly!” In his first full season, Caglianone has collected 14 home runs, the fewest of the four confirmed participants. His Statcast profile shows a 15.4% barrel rate, 93.7 mph exit velocity, 77.2 mph bat speed and a 57.2% hardāhit rate. He also averages 418 feet on his long balls, tying Mickey Moniak for sixth best in MLB. Despite the lower homeārun total, his elite metrics make him a surprise contender.
Contreras’ Power Surge
Contreras has sparked a power surge for Boston, matching last year’s homeārun tally by the midpoint with 20 roundātrippers. The 34āyearāold posted a .287/.381/.545 slash line in his debut season with the Red Sox, who have otherwise struggled to generate offense. After being left off the initial AllāStar roster, the AL added Contreras as a replacement for division rival Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He will compete in his first Home Run Derby while earning his fourth AllāStar nod.
Current Derby Lineup
Caglianone and Contreras join Ben Rice and 2025 runnerāup Junior Caminero as the announced contestants. All four young AL East stars have posted 26 home runs, currently the secondāhighest total in the American League behind Yordan Alvarez (29). Four spots remain open in the Home Run Derby, which Netflix will stream exclusively on Monday at 8āÆp.m. ET. Fans can watch the newcomers battle for the crown.
