Colin Montgomerie Makes Two Aces at Michigan’s Wee Course
On Monday, July 6, Colin Montgomerie turned heads at the grand opening of the Wee Course, a mini‑golf layout at Harbor Shores Resort in Benton Harbor, Michigan. While mingling with media and young players, he recorded a hole‑in‑one from 43 yards on the third hole using a chipper, then followed with another ace from 60 yards on the fifth. The back‑to‑back shots lifted the course’s total aces from 51 to 53.
“It was rather strange,” Montgomerie said, “We walked the first couple of holes and decided to hit a few shots. I grabbed one of Mr. Fettig’s clubs – a chipper – and figured I’d give it a try from about 60 yards. Somehow it found the hole. Then, incredibly, I did it again on the very next hole we played. Two holes‑in‑one in the same day – it’s just unbelievable.”
The Wee Course spans nine holes, each measuring between 20 and 80 yards. Depending on tee selection, total yardage runs from 275 to 500 yards, echoing design elements from Harbor Shores’ Jack Nicklaus Signature Design course. Jeff Fettig, former Whirlpool CEO and driving force behind the expansion, described the project as a place “where any level of player can connect through shared experiences.”
Video coverage highlights the feat. One clip by WSBT 22 of South Bend, Indiana, shows Montgomerie chipping near the green, while a second video from WOOD‑TV of Grand Rapids captures the full tee shot, ball flight, and hole drop. The footage underscores how the short format can produce memorable moments.
Montgomerie’s reputation rests on more than these aces. A World Golf Hall of Fame member, he claimed his first senior major at the 2014 Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, held at the Golf Club at Harbor Shores. His involvement in the Wee Course design earned him praise for honoring the resort’s quality and outreach.
“I am blown away by everything to do with this and the details and vision involved with Jeff Fettig and his group to put this together,” he remarked. “I have designed courses around the world, and to see this now in working order, the quality of everything is the big Harbor Shores course quality. It also gives opportunity to everybody.”
Fettig echoed the theme, noting the course aims to be “the social gathering spot similar to most towns and communities in Scotland.” He stressed affordability and the belief that without such opportunities, the next Tiger Woods might never be discovered. The early response suggests the model is already working.
The Wee Course illustrates how short‑format golf can generate excitement, community engagement, and historic moments—all while keeping the game accessible to players of every skill level.
