White Sox Eyes Aggressive Trade Deadline Moves
Why the White Sox Are Set to Make Moves
The Chicago White Sox sit at 50‑45 and lead the American League Central entering the All‑Star break, but they are not content to rest on that momentum. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers says the team has “assets and a hunger” to return to the playoffs, calling them one of the more aggressive purchasers at the upcoming deadline. With the division wide open and the Cleveland Guardians right behind them, the White Sox know a bold move could separate them from the pack.
Bullpen and Rotation Need Steep Upgrades
In the bullpen, closer Seranthony Domínguez is solid but the club still lacks a true elite reliever who can close out tight games. The starting staff is even more of a concern; aside from Davis Martin, the White Sox lack a proven postseason‑caliber pitcher. Adding a reliable mid‑rotation arm and a high‑leverage reliever would give them the depth needed to survive a deep postseason run.
Rogers points out that the organization now has a glut of infielders after the recent draft, making it difficult to find regular‑season roles for everyone. While prospects like Roch Cholowsky and Caleb Bonemer are promising, they are unlikely to be moved for immediate help. Instead, the front office could package a handful of marginally useful prospects—such as Billy Carlson, Kyle Lodise, William Bergolla Jr., or Anthony DePino—to acquire the pitching needed to shore up both the pen and the rotation.
Potential Trade Targets and Rental Options
Los Angeles Angels pitchers Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano represent logical targets; both are under team control and could provide immediate innings without committing long‑term money. Rental options like Freddy Peralta or Tarik Skubal are less likely to be included because the White Sox plan to keep them for the future rather than sell them at a discount. Acquiring one of these arms would address the glaring holes in the rotation and give the bullpen a stronger setup stage.
The White Sox also have a collection of lesser‑known arms—Javier Mogollon, Jeral Perez, Alexander Albertus, Ryan Burrowes, and others—that could be packaged for a starting pitcher or a reliever. These players are not future stars, but they can fill the immediate need for depth at the trade deadline. With the deadline set for August 3, the team is expected to act quickly and decisively to make a playoff push.
What This Means for the Postseason Hunt
If the White Sox follow Rogers’ aggressive projection, they could add a swing‑damper to the bullpen and a controllable arm to the rotation, turning a good team into a genuine contender. Even a modest upgrade in either area would improve their chances of squeezing extra wins out of the tight AL Central race. The upcoming moves will determine whether the club can finally break through after a long stretch of near‑misses and make the most of its current window of competitiveness.
