Paolo Maldini Named Italy Technical Director
Zoff Endorses Maldini’s Appointment
Dino Zoff, the World Cup‑winning captain and former Italy head coach, has spoken out in favor of Paolo Maldini’s recent appointment as the FIGC’s technical director. Zoff called the choice “a perfect appointment in terms of character, charisma and competence,” highlighting Maldini’s decades of service to Milan and the national side. The veteran defender also played under Zoff and recalls his father Cesare’s role as Bearzot’s assistant during the 1982 World Cup triumph. Zoff emphasized that Maldini must be given the freedom to “follow his beliefs” without external interference, adding that he has no preferred name for the next head coach.
Leonardo, the former Milan and PSG director, will act as an advisor to Maldini, creating a leadership trio that also includes FIGC President Giovanni Malago. Zoff acknowledged the wisdom of bringing Leonardo on board, noting that “it’s right that a leader surrounds himself with people he trusts.” The new setup is intended to mark the start of a fresh chapter for Italy, which failed to qualify for the last three World Cups.
Path to Renewal for the Azzurri
Maldini’s contract runs for four years, extending to the end of the 2030 World Cup, signaling a long‑term vision for Italian football. The appointment follows a period of setbacks, and the FIGC hopes the combined expertise of Maldini, Leonardo and Malago will reverse that trend. Zoff’s support carries weight, given his own successes as a player and coach for the national team. The former defender also praised Maldini’s “so much” contribution to Milan and the Azzurri, underscoring the belief that the new technical director can reshape Italy’s future.
Zoff’s Guidance on Roles and Responsibilities
When asked for advice, Zoff stressed the need for “clarity on the roles and responsibilities” within the national team structure. He expressed confidence in Malago, stating he knows him well and does not doubt his capabilities. Zoff hopes the entire organization will maintain an awareness of the current state of Italian football as Maldini takes charge. His message is clear: a well‑defined framework will help Maldini implement his ideas effectively, without undue interference from outside sources. Finally, Zoff made it known that he has no particular candidate in mind for the next head coach, leaving that decision to the new technical director.
The combined experience of Maldini’s playing days, Leonardo’s executive background and Zoff’s managerial credibility aims to provide Italy with a solid foundation for upcoming qualifiers and tournaments. The FIGC’s president, Malago, will oversee the overall direction, ensuring that the technical department operates cohesively. Stakeholders across Italian football are watching closely, hoping the new leadership will translate into on‑field results. The journey to rebuild Italy’s World Cup credentials begins with these appointments and the clear framework Zoff advocates.
