Fermin Lopez Set for Barcelona Season Opener After Injury Recovery
Season Cut Short by a Tough Injury
Fermin Lopez missed the summer after a fractured fifth metatarsal on May 17 during Barcelona’s La Liga clash with Real Betis. The timing was especially harsh, as he had just posted a career‑best campaign with 13 goals and 16 assists. That stunning form had also put him in contention for a Spain World Cup spot, a chance that evaporated when the injury struck. At 23, he still has future World Cups in sight, but the immediate focus is returning to Barca’s first team.
Rehab, Holiday Break, and Non‑stop Work
After the initial disappointment, Lopez chose a balanced recovery plan. He spent about two weeks with his family in Cadiz, using the break for a mental reset while keeping up physical work. Barcelona assigned physiotherapist Jose Maria Cortes to oversee his program, which included roughly three hours of daily training. The structured routine helped him stay ahead of the typical rehab timeline.
Training Progress and Pre‑season Plans
Arriving for pre‑season, Lopez has already resumed running and ball work on the pitch. Though he isn’t yet training with the full squad, his comeback is ahead of schedule. The club expects him to join the St George’s Park training camp from July 27 to August 3, hoping for unrestricted sessions there. Barcelona, however, remains cautious and will not rush his return to full competitive action.

Flick Considers Lopez a Key Midfielder
Hansi Flick views Lopez as a vital piece of Barcelona’s new project, praising his intensity, intelligent movement, goalscoring ability and tactical versatility. The midfielder’s standout season turned him into one of the team’s top attacking threats. Expectations are high that he will be ready for Barcelona’s La Liga opener on August 23 against Elche. His determination to become one of Flick’s essential players adds excitement for the upcoming campaign.
