Welsh Sprinters Set London Diamond League Records

Jake Heyward’s Mile Triumph

Jake Heyward, a 27‑year‑old from Cardiff, ran a personal best of three minutes 46.73 seconds to finish third in the London Diamond League mile. The time not only broke his own previous record but also sliced more than five seconds off his May 2022 effort of 3:51.99. Heyward, who spent nearly four years away after Achilles injuries, made a comeback earlier this month and has already been added to Team Wales for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Charlotte Henrich Crushes 400m Mark Twice

The 19‑year‑old Charlotte Henrich posted a new personal best of 50.45 seconds, lowering the Welsh 400m record by 0.13 seconds and setting it for the second time in under a month. Her latest mark pushes aside the previous benchmark she had set in June and also erases the 44‑year‑old record held by Michelle Scutt since 1982. Henrich, who has improved almost a second this year, plans to represent Wales in the 400m at the upcoming Commonwealth Games after her silver at the 2023 Youth Games.

Jeremiah Azu’s Glasgow Hopes

Wales’ top sprinter Jeremiah Azu crossed the line in eighth place with a time of 10.07 seconds in the 100m at the London event. The race was topped by Nigeria’s Kanyinsola Ajayi, while Azu’s performance gave him a solid preparation race before the summer Games. His result adds to a growing pool of Welsh talent heading to Glasgow.

Looking Ahead to the Commonwealth Games

The London Diamond League provided crucial timing insights for the Welsh squad targeting the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. Heyward and Henrich both posted times that position them as record‑holders and contenders in their events. With these swift performances, Wales enters the competition with renewed confidence and a clear benchmark for success.
