49ers Player to Watch at Each Defensive Spot
The 49ers are kicking off their 10th training camp under head coach Kyle Shanahan, and the arrival of new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris means fresh eyes on the unit. With veterans set to return on July 25, fans and analysts will be scanning the lineup for early clues about this year’s defensive identity. The upcoming month offers a clear window to evaluate each spot, especially the newcomers who arrived this offseason.
Osa Odighizuwa â Defensive Tackle
Odighizuwa is the 49ersâ latest addition to the defensive line after spending five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Over those years he logged 84 games, 216 tackles, 81 quarterback hits, 17 sacks, two forced fumbles and one pass defensed. San Franciscoâs frontâseven could look markedly different once Odighizuwa steps onto the field, and his experience will be pivotal in establishing the interior pressure the coaching staff wants.
Romello Height â Edge Defender
Height arrived as the first defensive pick in the 2026 draft after a productive college career that included AllâBig 12 honors. He notched 111 tackles and 16.5 sacks across 50 games, adding four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception. With Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams and Keion White still recovering from surgeries, the rookie is expected to see significant early action and could become a foundational edge presence.
Fred Warner â Inside Linebacker
Warner is a fourâtime AllâPro and Pro Bowler who brings 948 tackles, 56 pass deflections, 38 quarterback hits, 17 forced fumbles, 10 sacks, 10 interceptions and seven fumble recoveries over 121 games. A broken and dislocated ankle in Week 6 of 2025 sidelined him for the rest of the season, so this camp will be key to gauge his recovery and ensure he hasnât lost his elite speed and range. He remains one of the NFLâs most productive linebackers, and a healthy Warner could anchor the 49ersâ defensive core.
Upton Stout â Cornerback
Stout emerged from Western Kentucky as an AllâCâUSA performer and is now a thirdâround pick (No. 100 overall) for San Francisco. As a rookie he played 58% of defensive snaps, recording 82 tackles, five pass deflections, two quarterback hits, a sack and a forced fumble in 16 games. At 5âfootâ9 his height may limit his longâzone coverage upside, but his 2025 season showed he can hold his own at the next level and stay competitive in press coverage.
Marques Sigle â Safety
After playing at North Dakota State and later Kansas State, Sigle was selected in the fifth round (No. 160) by the 49ers. He logged 52 tackles, two pass deflections and a fumble recovery while appearing in 15 games as a rookie, though he spent part of the season on the bench after an early start. The 24âyearâold has now had a full offseason to refine his technique, and his experience could sharpen the 49ersâ secondary depth heading into the regular season.
The 49ersâ training camp presents a polished opportunity to evaluate these five defenders as the team looks to solidify a unit that will be a cornerstone of the 2025 campaign. Fans should keep an eye on Odighizuwaâs interior presence, Heightâs edge rush potential, Warnerâs recovery from injury, Stoutâs coverage growth, and Sigleâs development at safety. As the squad settles into the SAP Performance Facility, each playerâs performance will set the tone for what could be another playoff run.
