Garrett Wright Chosen by Angels in 2026 MLB Draft
Draft Day Decision
Jackson High School graduate Garrett Wright is heading to the professional ranks after the Los Angeles Angels selected him in the eighth round of the 2026 MLB draft. The pick took place on Sunday, July 12, in Philadelphia, marking Wright as the sixth player taken in Round 8 and the 229th overall choice. The Angels secured a 21âyearâold catcher who offers both power and defensive versatility.
College Career Highlights
Before the draft, MLB.com listed Wright as the 190th-ranked prospect following three collegiate seasonsâtwo at Bowling Green in the MidâAmerican Conference and one at the University of Tennessee in the SEC. He earned 2024 MAC Freshman of the Year and 2025 MAC Defensive Player of the Year while batting .406 to lead the conference. At Tennessee, Wright was the teamâs leading hitter with a .348 average and a 1.033 OPS, collecting 17 doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 41 runs scored and 30 RBIs.
His defensive work stood out as well; Wright committed just one error in 179 chances behind the plate and in the outfield. He still has one year of college eligibility remaining and said before the draft that he planned to turn pro if selected. The Angels valued him enough to assign a draft slot value of $249,300, and the signing deadline is July 27.
Stark County History
Wright becomes the first player from Stark County to be drafted since Gavin Bruni (Washington Nationals, 17th round, 2024). The local connection brings extra excitement to the Angelsâ pick and highlights a growing talent pipeline from the area. Fans in Canton and surrounding communities are eager to watch Wrightâs progress in the majors.
Future Outlook
At 6âfootâ4 and 193 pounds, Wright projects as a rightâhanded hitter who can also play both catcher and outfield. His blend of power, speed and defensive instincts could make him a valuable asset for the Angelsâ outfield depth or a future MLB catcher. The organization will have until July 27 to finalize his signing.
