Benitez Open to Scotland Job as SFA Faces Salary Hurdles
Benitez Signals Interest in the Scottish Role
Rafael Benitez openly discussed the vacant Scotland post on Talksport, saying he knows “some of the squad” and praised the nation for reaching the World Cup. He described the summer tournament run as the point where the side “achieved what they could achieve”, hinting they could not progress further. When pressed whether that meant he was ruling out Scotland, the 66‑year‑old replied that he remains “open to international football”, provided he receives “the tools” needed for the job.
From Anfield Superstar to Nine Jobs in 16 Years
The Spaniard left Liverpool in 2010 after a glittering spell that included the dramatic 2005 Champions League comeback against AC Milan. He won two La Liga titles, a UEFA Cup, and guided clubs such as Chelsea, Inter Milan and Napoli to major trophies. Benitez has taken nine managerial roles since Anfield, lasting less than a year in six of them, and he was dismissed from stints at Inter, Real Madrid, Everton and Celta Vigo.
Costly Considerations for the SFA
Scotland fans are looking for a manager who can blend attacking flair with tournament qualification, but the financial reality may block any top‑level hire. Benitez reportedly earned over £3 million annually at Panathinaikos, a record salary in Greek football, while Steve Clarke’s contract was around £500 k per year. The Scottish FA’s budget would make it unlikely they could meet the amount Benitez’s representatives would demand.
Other Candidates Quickly Ruled Out
Calls for Ange Postecoglou, who just signed a lucrative deal with Saudi Arabia’s Al‑Nassr, look unrealistic, as do proposals for David Moyes, still under contract at Everton. Benitez may be available and eager for a new challenge, but his price tag places him well beyond the SFA’s current financial reach. The search for a new head coach continues, with the SFA balancing ambition against budgetary constraints.
