James Cook Climbes to No. 7 in NFL Running Back Rankings

Climbing the ESPN List

The Bills’ dynamic back now sits at seventh place in ESPN’s annual running‑back survey, which aggregates votes from more than 70 NFL executives, coaches and scouts. Cook’s rise follows a season where he amassed 1,621 rushing yards, the most in the league. He also earned a spot on every single ballot, one of just five backs to achieve that feat.

Why Voters Praised His Versatility

A panel of AFC evaluators highlighted his three‑down skill set, pass‑catch ability, interior run power and speed on the outside. One executive described him as “a complete player,” noting his impact across passing, rushing and coverage packages. Cook’s season also featured the league‑leading 358 yards over expected, per NFL Next Gen Stats.

Historical Milestones for Buffalo

His AFC rushing title marks the first time a Bills runner has led the conference since Thurman Thomas captured the honor in 1993. It also ends a 49‑year championship drought, the franchise’s last rushing crown belonging to O.J. Simpson in 1975 and 1976. Cook’s achievement adds a fresh chapter to Bills history while reigniting hopes for a ground‑oriented offense.

How He Stacks Up Against the Elite

The five players ranked above Cook are Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, Saquon Barkley, Jonathan Taylor and Derrick Henry. Henry, the Ravens star, holds the No. 6 spot, edging Cook by a narrow margin despite ESPN analyst Jeremy Fowler’s belief that Cook “probably should be ranked higher.” Below Cook are De’Von Achane, Kenneth Walker III and Breece Hall, who occupy Nos. 8, 9 and 10 respectively.

What This Means for the Future

With a reputation for doing the dirty work and contributing in the passing game, Cook provides Bills offensive coordinator Doug Marrone a reliable feature back to build around. If he can sustain his yardage totals and continue to earn recognition from league insiders, a higher ranking could follow in the coming seasons. Fans can expect Buffalo’s ground attack to remain a central component of the team’s playoff prospects.
