Gerrit Cole’s Tough Outing Against Dodgers
Early Dominance and a Critical Decision
Gerrit Cole dominated the Dodgers through six innings, allowing just three singles as the Yankees built a 1‑0 lead. By that point he had already tossed 90 pitches, then faced Mookie Betts and worked around a walk that pushed manager Aaron Boone to reconsider his pitcher’s role. “I was feeling the situation out,” Boone explained later, “Obviously, in hindsight, I probably should grab him there.”
Boone pulled Cole despite his willingness to keep going, opting to bring in Brent Headrick to face left‑handed Max Muncy. The decision sparked a pivotal moment that would change the game’s outcome, but Boone felt Cole was still in a good spot that night.
Home Run Turns the Tide
When Muncy stepped up, a 90 mph slider over the heart of the plate found the batter’s barrel, producing a two‑run shot that became the decisive blow in a 2‑1 loss. Cole, who threw a season‑high 103 pitches and struck out eight, saw his streak of quality starts end with those two runs. “I got Headrick teed up there. That’s on me,” Boone admitted, “I should probably get him there, even though it felt like he was in a good place.”
Cole reflected on the moment, “I looked at the pitch. It’s not where I wanted, but I looked at the swing and it was pretty excellent. But yea, it stinks.” The homer dampened what had been his best outing since returning from elbow surgery over a year ago.
What It Means for the Yankees
Despite the defeat, both Cole and Boone see encouraging signs for the second half of the season. Cole lowered his ERA to 3.93, sits at 3‑5, and has kept the opposition to three runs or fewer in seven of his ten starts, including six where he allowed two runs or fewer. “Back‑to‑back outstanding outings for him. And tonight was really good,” Boone praised, noting the pitcher’s command and stamina.
Collecting experience in deeper outings, Cole added, “It’s nice to push the stamina to, get back out there and, for an extra hitter and just keep going for it. Keep competing, so that’s great. Learning opportunity physically and obviously, hitting deeper into the second half, a good learning opportunity as well that it’s not over till it’s over.”
The Yankees will look to rebound when they meet the Dodgers again on Saturday night, aiming to turn this close loss into momentum for the stretch run.
