Colts Look to Add Depth at Safety

The Indianapolis Colts convened a workout for veteran safety Jordan Whitehead, as first reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, on Monday. The 29‑year‑old missed the entire 2024 campaign while recovering from a neck injury sustained in a January 2024 car accident en route to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice facility. With a proven track record and Super Bowl experience, the Colts are kicking the tires on a player who could fill a need in a relatively young defensive backfield.

Whitehead was selected in the 2018 fourth round by Tampa Bay and has also spent time with the New York Jets from 2022‑2023. Over seven NFL seasons he has appeared in 105 games, starting 101 of them. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Buccaneers in 2020 after recording 16 starts on the path to the title.

His most recent on‑field work came in the 2023 season, when he posted a +58.0 overall grade from Pro Football Focus in 12 starts for Tampa Bay’s defense. That performance highlighted his ability to stay impactful even after a lengthy absence. The Colts are hopeful that similar numbers could translate to the AFC South if he remains healthy.

Indianapolis’s safety position already features several players vying for spots on the eventual 53‑man roster. The unit is anchored by projected starters Cam Bynum and rookie A.J. Haulcy, with a stable of backups that includes Hunter Wohler, Jonathan Owens, and Juanyeh Thomas. Holdovers from last year’s squad—Daniel Scott, Ben Nikkel, and Trey Washington—add further experience, while undrafted rookie Austin Brown brings fresh potential.

While the Colts’ safety depth appears stronger than it did at this juncture last offseason, adding a high‑caliber veteran like Whitehead cannot hurt. His Super Bowl‑winning pedigree gives the young unit an extra layer of reliability as they prepare for the upcoming season.
