Pedersen Wins Stage 4, Traeen Claims Yellow Jersey
Mads Pedersen delivered a decisive sprint 300 meters before the line to capture Stage 4 of the Tour de France on Tuesday. The Danish rider crossed first ahead of his Lidl‑Trek teammate Quinn Simmons and Spaniard Raúl García, securing his third career stage victory. Pedersen, a former world road race champion, was described as a powerful force in the field.
Norwegian rider Torstein Traeen, riding for Uno‑X Mobility, assumed the yellow jersey after finishing eighth on the day. He now leads four‑time champion Tadej Pogacar and two‑time winner Jonas Vingegaard by just under eight minutes. Despite the striking lead, Traeen is not viewed as an overall contender and could relinquish the color as early as Thursday’s Pyrenees stage.
Stage 4 Highlights and Tactics
The 182‑kilometer route from Carcassonne to Foix in Occitania featured four moderate climbs under sweltering 38 °C (100 °F) heat. Organizers added extra feeding zones to keep riders hydrated. With 50 kilometers remaining, a trio of Mathias Vacek, Jan Tratnik and Alex Kirsch briefly led before a fresh group of ten took control.
Frenchman Kévin Vauquelin initiated a move, but Pedersen responded with blistering speed on the outside, breaking clear and setting up his sprint win. The stage’s tough conditions and tactical shifts highlight the varied challenges riders face early in the three‑week race.
What Lies Ahead After Stage 4
Wednesday’s Stage 5 offers a mostly flat course that should favor sprinters, giving teams a chance to balance their strengths. Thursday’s Stage 6 climbs into the high Pyrenees, a terrain that could strip Traeen of the yellow jersey before the race’s pivotal mountain segment.
The Tour de France continues its three‑week journey, concluding on July 26 in Paris. While Pedersen’s win adds to his résumé, the overall battle remains in flux with Pogacar, Vingegaard and other contenders watching closely.
