Diego Forlan Takes Over Uruguay Interim Manager Role
New Appointment
Diego Forlan, the Uruguay striker who once dazzled at Old Trafford, has been handed the interim head coach job for his national side. The Uruguayan Football Association announced the move on Sunday after Marcelo Bielsa chose to step down. Forlan will also guide the Under‑20 squad at the upcoming World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan while managing the senior team through March 2027.
Uruguay’s World Cup Trouble
La Celeste’s campaign ended in disappointment, finishing third in the group with just two points. Uruguay trailed Spain, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, missing the knockout stage for the first time recently. Unconfirmed reports suggested internal tensions that reportedly involved United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, though the exact cause remains unclear.
Ugarte’s Setback
Manuel Ugarte suffered an ACL injury that will keep him out for several months. United had earmarked him for sale, but the player has decided to stay and recover rather than leave the club. His absence will affect both club and national‑team plans in the coming months.
Forlan’s United Journey
Joining the Red Devils in 2002, Forlan became part of a famed attacking line that included Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole. Over roughly two seasons he appeared 98 times, scoring 17 goals. Notable moments include a brace at Liverpool in a 2‑1 away win and a decisive strike against Chelsea in both cup and league fixtures.
He moved to Villarreal in the summer of 2004 before continuing his career with Atlético Madrid, where he truly flourished. Forlan shone on the world stage at the 2010 World Cup, netting five goals and leading Uruguay to the semi‑finals. His outstanding play earned him the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
Road Ahead for the National Side
AUF president Ignacio Alonso highlighted the strategic value of having Forlan near the national setup. “We have the opportunity to incorporate him, in this case, into the Under‑20 National Team,” Alonso remarked. “Having Diego inside the complex, with the experience he has, having played for the best teams in the world, having been exposed to all kinds of methodologies, having his own, being a national team player and with experience as a First Division coach… I think it was a great opportunity.” “He’s excited,” he added. The association has left the door open for a permanent appointment if the interim spell goes well. “We’re hiring a U‑20 coach who will manage the senior team’s matches. Then, the situation will dictate how the evaluations go,” officials noted.
