The season also produced a Heisman Trophy runner‑up in quarterback Diego Pavia. Coach Clark Lea and his players sensed a shift in confidence at the 2026 SEC media days, noting more believers in their ability to compete in the deep conference.

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who’s had the courage to believe in our vision and walk beside us along the way,” Lea said on July 21. “I’m especially grateful to our players, those who chose to stay and fight together (and) build something meaningful while the world laughed from the safety of the sideline.

Lea feels emboldened after Vanderbilt posted 17 wins in the last two seasons, including a 10‑3 record in 2025. The success has filled the program’s environment with soaring optimism and earned credibility beyond its traditional fanbase. Running back Sedrick Alexander echoed that shift, saying, “In the building, we definitely believed. But we gained some believers after last season.”

What the Heisman Runner‑Up Means

Diego Pavia fueled the surge, but he has exhausted his eligibility, leaving many to view his playmaking as a bright but brief spark. The question now is whether the Commodores can sustain the momentum without their Heisman‑contending signal caller. Replacing Pavia is a tall order, with either five‑star quarterback Jared Curtis or senior Blaze Berlowitz tasked with filling the void.
