Roger Hunt’s 1966 World Cup Shirt Heads to Auction
The Iconic Shirt
Roger Hunt wore a long‑sleeved white Liverpool shirt in a group match against France on July 21, 1966, netting both goals in a 2‑0 victory. That match‑worn garment is now slated to reach up to £8,000 when it goes under the hammer. The jersey bears a handwritten “best wishes, Roger Hunt, 1966” and carries brown mud stains, underscoring its match‑use history.
Auction Details
The prized item will be sold by Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes, Wiltshire, on Saturday. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge described the lot as “delighted” to present it “in this most important of World Cup weeks where England could end 60 years of hurt.” In addition to the shirt, copies of original photographs of Hunt are also slated for auction that day, offering collectors a glimpse of his historic tenure.

Hunt’s 1966 World Cup Heroics
Hunt featured in every match of England’s 1966 campaign, scoring three times as the squad progressed from the group stage. His contributions helped the Three Lions reach the final, where a 4‑2 triumph over West Germany at Wembley secured the trophy. The win marked the end of a six‑decade trophy drought, cementing Hunt’s place in football history.
Wiltshire Connections
Although born in Warrington, Hunt spent his National Service in the Devizes area and guised his talents with Devizes Town during that period. He lodged with a local family, forging friendships that lasted a lifetime. The shirt was eventually given to the family’s patriarch after the World Cup, a souvenir that will now be auctioned.
