Jaguars Running Backs Selected as Biggest Roster Weakness
Clay Flags Jacksonville’s Greatest Concern
ESPN analyst Mike Clay identified the Jaguars’ biggest roster weakness as their running back position. He viewed the interior defensive line as a question, but singled out the backfield as the most uncertain area. Clay’s assessment follows recent criticism of Jacksonville’s roster‑building strategy at this spot.
The Backfield Overhaul
Travis Etienne, who rushed for 1,107 yards last season, departed in free agency. He will be replaced by a three‑man committee: Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez and LeQuint Allen. The expectation is that Rodriguez and Tuten share the primary load, while Allen sees frequent work on passing downs.
What the Analysts Expect
Tuten flashed as a rookie but was limited to 83 carries and 14 targets, showcasing speed and a home‑run ability. Rodriguez has posted a 4.6‑yards‑per‑carry average over 198 carries, though his receiving production is minimal (six catches). Allen, a rookie with 23 carries and 11 targets, is noted for his pass‑blocking and should see increased involvement as a pass catcher.
Individual Strengths Bring Collective Potential
Each back brings a distinct skill set: Tuten’s speed offers explosive plays, Rodriguez’s physicality creates yardage, and Allen’s pass protection helps the offense stay balanced. No single player is likely to match Etienne’s 1,107‑yard season. However, the Jaguars believe the trio can collectively match or exceed that output.
Key to Success: Gaining More Yards Than Expected
The unit’s improvement hinges on generating extra yards from short runs—turning 2‑ or 3‑yard gains into 4‑ or 5‑yard pickups. Better offensive line play will be crucial for this advancement. Consistency in conversion can elevate the entire attack, even with a less‑proved backfield.
Looking Ahead
The Jaguars have a clear vision for their running back room, but execution remains untested. Improved play from the offensive line and smarter play‑calling will be essential for the committee to thrive. If the backs can consistently gain more yards than anticipated, Jacksonville’s offense could find a new source of momentum.
