USMNT Crushed by Belgium at 2026 World Cup
The United States men’s national team entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup as hosts with early momentum, but the recent loss to Belgium has turned the mood sour. The USMNT now trails 3‑1, and many die‑hard fans are even cheering for the Europeans instead of their own side. This stark shift came after FIFA reversed the one‑game suspension of striker Folarin Balogun, a decision that sparked a wave of criticism among supporters.

The USMNT were off to a blazing start at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As a result, many genuinely believed the hosts had a shot at winning the tournament.

However, the last few days haven’t been kind to the USMNT. To be fair, FIFA overturning Folarin Balogun’s one-game suspension against Belgium has turned many fans into USMNT haters.
This obviously includes a plethora of Team USA fans, who are currently supporting Belgium over their own country.

Robert Griffin III hammers US ‘traitors’ at 2026 FIFA World Cup
Right now, the USMNT are down 3-1 against Belgium, as the hosts look all set to exit the competition. Despite that, many US fans are showing support to Belgium over their own country.
This hasn’t sat well with former NFL star Robert Griffin III, who labeled such fans as traitors in a vicious X rant.

“If you are a US Citizen and you aren’t rooting for USA against Belgium, you are a traitor. No other way to put it. You can’t be trusted if you are rooting against your own country in the World Cup,” RGIII wrote.
Once again, if the US President, Donald Trump, hadn’t intervened with Balogun’s suspension, the USMNT would have thousands more supporters in their corner.
Alas, the US President couldn’t keep politics out of the biggest soccer tournament in the world, and the USMNT are paying the price for it.

Fan Disenchantment After Balogun’s Ban
The reversal of Balogun’s suspension turned a simple disciplinary issue into a national conversation. Many supporters who once celebrated the striker now see him as a symbol of political meddling in sports. This shift has caused a surge of anti‑USMNT sentiment among a subset of American fans who now cheer for Belgium.
RGIII’s Blunt Rebuke
Robert Griffin III used his platform to call out disgruntled fans directly. His tweet called anyone not backing the USMNT a traitor and warned that such disloyalty cannot be tolerated. The post quickly sparked debate about the responsibilities of citizens when their country competes on the world stage.
Politics, Politics Everywhere
RGIII hinted that President Donald Trump’s involvement in Balogun’s case altered the fan landscape. He suggested that without that interference, the USMNT would have enjoyed far broader domestic support. The intersection of sports and politics has become a defining storyline of this World Cup for the United States.
The USMNT’s 3‑1 deficit is more than a scoreline; it reflects a deeper crisis of identity and loyalty among its own supporters. Recovering on the field will require the team to also win back the confidence of a fan base that feels betrayed and divided. The upcoming matches will test both the players’ skill and the nation’s resolve.
