Scott Fitch Lands Sixth Gold with USA Basketball
Gold Triumph at Istanbul
Scott Fitch added another gold medal to his growing collection, leading the USA Basketball U17 Men’s National Team to victory at the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul, Turkey. The triumph marks his sixth gold with Team USA, coming as either an assistant or head coach over the years. Fitch described the podium moment under the Star Spangled Banner as a “surreal moment,” recalling how the feeling cannot be fully captured until experienced firsthand. “You try and picture it or figure out what it’s going to feel like,” he said upon returning to New York, “but you can’t until you’re actually there.”
Championship Clash and Team Chemistry
Fitchâs squad breezed through the tournament unbeaten, finishing with a perfect 7â0 record before facing Serbia in the championship game. The Americans dominated with a 107â81 win, securing the title and marking the United Statesâ eighth consecutive gold at the event. The victory was celebrated with NaVorro Bowman Jr., Beckham Black, and other players, capturing a memorable image of the coach and his stars.
Key Players Shine on the World Stage
CJ Rosser sparked the offense with a 23âpoint performance, while Beckham Black and Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje earned spots on the tournamentâs AllâStar Five. The United States also routed France 115â84, Japan 128â66, Italy 131â80, Cameroon 141â85, Puerto Rico 149â82, and Australia 114â65. âEverything I was telling (Boumtje Boumtje), he was soaking in,â Fitch said, noting the centerâs potential as a top NBA draft pick in two years because he âyearns to get better. He’s not satisfied.â
Coaching Journey and Development Philosophy
Beyond the recent gold, Fitchâs international rĂŠsumĂŠ now includes a title at the 2025 FIBA U16 Menâs AmeriCup, his first headâcoach role for the U.S. He previously contributed as an assistant at the 2024 U17 World Cup, 2023 U16 AmeriCup, 2018 U17 World Cup, and 2017 U16 AmeriCup. The selection process required trimming 24 hopefuls down to 12, leaving just a week to prepare for the nineâday sprint. âThey’re still kids,â Fitch emphasized, âEven though these kids are ultra talented, a lot of them don’t do the little things well. If I can teach them that and help them get better, and when they feel and see they can improve, they yearn for more.â
Upcoming Events and Fairport Commitments
Fitchâs calendar is already packed with clinics, a summer league with his Fairport squad, and workouts featuring local talent such as Isaiah Stewart. The next USA Basketball assignment is slated for October, followed by an inviteâonly camp in Colorado that will showcase 80 of the nationâs top players from grades 9â12. Meanwhile, Fairport has captured four Section V titles since Scott took over from his father Jeff in 2001â02. His leadership on the high school level continues to complement his international duties.
Legacy on and off the Court
As a player, Fitch earned firstâteam AllâGreater Rochester honors and two NCAA Division III AllâAmerican nods while starring at Geneseo. He succeeded his father Jeff as Fairportâs head coach in 2001â02, a role that has produced four Section V championships. The combination of high school success, collegiate achievement, and multiple international gold medals underscores a career defined by consistent excellence and dedication to the game.
