Gotland to Host 2031 Island Games
Gotland Confirmed as Host
Guernsey and Jersey have welcomed the news that Gotland will stage the 2031 Island Games. The event runs from 28 June to 4 July 2031, marking the third time the Swedish island will host the competition. Team sports such as football, basketball and volleyball are on the programme, meaning both islands are likely to field strong contingents.
Impact on Neighboring Islands
Island Games Association chairman Steve Jacobs of Jersey has a personal history with Gotland, having competed in 1999 and served as chairman in 2017. He praised Gotland’s organisational ability, saying the Games “won’t be any problems with them.”
Shooting will return after an eight‑year absence, having been dropped from Orkney in 2023 and omitted from the Faroe Islands and Isle of Man in subsequent years. Guernsey’s strong shooting tradition was highlighted by its 16 gold medals at the 2023 home Games.
Nikki Trebert, Guernsey’s 2017 women’s pistol gold medallist, warned that removing a sport for three straight events is “tough.” She noted Gotland topped the medal table with shooting in 2017, making it an ideal venue for the discipline’s return.
Officials Voice Confidence
Chris Jackson, chairman of Guernsey’s Island Games Association, expects a smooth 2031 event. He recalled the previous hosting nine years ago was well‑run and said “everyone enjoyed it” without major issues. Jackson hopes improved links will support the 2031 edition.
What It Means for Future Games
The inclusion of team sports and the reinstatement of shooting expand the competition’s appeal and competitive depth. Neighboring islands will likely increase their squad sizes to take advantage of the broader programme. The event also reinforces Gotland’s reputation as a capable host, building on its successful 2017 run.
