Germany Calls for Squad Overhaul
Hamann and Basler Frontload Calls for Change
Two former German midfielders, Didi Hamann and Mario Basler, have publicly urged the national team to trim its veteran roster. They argue that the current crop of senior players has not delivered the breakthroughs Germany needs. Hamann singled out Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sané as players who should step aside. He also cited the recent tournament struggles, noting that Germany has not progressed beyond the quarter‑finals in the last five competitions and has missed the round of 16 in the three most recent World Cups.
Specific Players Targeted
Basler echoed the theme of a “real clean‑up” and listed several names as unsuitable for the national side. According to him, Kimmich is too slow and lacks a future, while Sané, Antonio Rüdiger and Pascal Groß belong to a group of washed‑up talents. He stressed the need for fresh, hungry players and warned that Bayern Munich could face problems if the club continues to rely on Kimmich in the #6 role. The former captain’s comments hint at a broader desire to replace the current generation with younger alternatives.
Matthäus Defends Kimmich
Lothar Matthäus offered a contrasting view in a column for Sky Germany, backing Kimmich as a key figure for the forthcoming era. Despite a lackluster World Cup performance, Matthäus sees Kimmich as a natural captain under the new coach. He urged Kimmich to find a position where his influence is greatest, suggesting that Jonathan Tah and Nico Schlotterbeck could also emerge as faces of the team. Matthäus’s support adds a layer of debate to the ongoing squad discussion.
What It Means for the Future
The diverging opinions highlight a crossroads for German football, with the national team balancing experience against the demand for new blood. The calls for a purge reflect frustration over limited progress in major tournaments and a desire to reset the culture. If the DFB follows through, expect a wave of youngsters to join a side that has often leaned on veteran stalwarts. The next coaching cycle will be crucial in determining whether the squad will evolve into a competitive unit for upcoming competitions.
