Transfer Background and Key Numbers
Wilson had been a Fulham regular after a successful loan spell that culminated in 11 goals and 20 assists during the 2021â22 campaign, helping the club regain promotion to the Premier League. He signed permanently from Liverpool in the summer of 2022 but never featured in a league match for the Reds. Over the next three seasons (2022â23 to 2024â25) Wilson made 103 appearances in all competitions, starting 52 times. He contributed 14 goals and 13 assists during that period.
Last term proved to be the breakout season for the 28âyearâold. Wilson played 41 games, starting 34 of them, and registered 11 goals and eight assists. He also created 46 chances for teammates, showcasing his dual threat as a scorer and playâmaker.
Evertonâs Missed Opportunity
Everton were among several clubs tracking Wilson in January, with the Toffees reportedly ready to meet a ÂŁ8âŻmillion bid. Fulham insisted on a higher figure, however, and Evertonâs transfer committeeâMoyes includedâopted not to match the asking price. The club then signed Tyrique George on loan, a move that left Wilson without a move to Goodison Park at the time.
By May and June, speculation intensified, with Everton again linked to the winger. Leeds, AstonâŻVilla and even Villa expressed strong interest. Leeds were prepared to offer around ÂŁ120âŻ000 per week, plus a sizable signingâon fee. Evertonâs board, however, was unwilling to meet such figures, despite Wilsonâs recent form and the clubâs need for a rightâwing option.
Why Leeds Pounced
Leeds seized the opportunity as Wilson was out of contract at the end of the season and delaying talks. The Yorkshire sideâs wages were substantially higher than Evertonâs, reflecting a willingness to secure the player before his contractual rights could be compromised. Wilson, keen to return to north Wales, accepted the offer, completing the move on a free transfer.
What Wilson Brings to Elland Road
His skill set matches what Leeds have been looking for: a genuine goal threat, creative spark and a natural leftâfooter who can operate behind the striker. With Premiership experience and a reputation for spectacular plays, Wilson is seen as an upgrade over the current options. He also adds depth to a squad thatâs been looking for a reliable wide forward.
The signing marks a significant boost for Leeds United, injecting a player who performed at a high level for Fulham in the recent campaign and who can contribute immediately. Whether he can replicate his strong form remains to be seen, but the Premier League is now set to welcome a new face at the northâLondon side.
