Demian Maia’s connection with Ian Garry began at a seminar in Barcelona in 2023. After Maia taught at a friend’s academy, Garry and his wife reached out, starting a regular training relationship that includes trips to Brazil. Last week Maia traveled to Spain for another seminar and spent several days with Garry in an intensive grappling camp aimed at the upcoming clash with Islam Makhachev. Garry completed his final preparation phase in England under the guidance of jiu‑jitsu coach John Hathaway, who also competed in the UFC welterweight division.

Standing at 17‑1, Garry’s unbeaten streak includes a decisive win over Carlos Prates, where a last‑minute takedown variation was executed about ten times. Maia highlights Garry’s fight IQ as his greatest weapon, praising the Irish fighter’s ability to read opponents and adapt quickly. Garry’s longer reach, elite takedown defense and strong cardio are viewed as additional threats to Islam Makhachev’s dominant run, but his mental sharpness separates him from most rivals. His corner will also feature Diego Lima, John Hathaway and Paulo Mauricio Strauch on fight night.

Makhachev’s Elite Jiu‑Jitsu and the Title Stakes

Islam Makhachev enters as the UFC’s No. 1 pound‑for‑pound fighter and a heavy favorite at -300 odds, yet Maia warns the bout will be historic. He describes Makhachev’s jiu‑jitsu as level‑complete, suggesting the Dagestani could compete in top‑tier no‑gi tournaments.
