Iowa and Kansas will become the first Division I college baseball squads to step onto the iconic Field of Dreams field in Dyersville, Iowa. The teams’ athletics departments announced the exhibition will take place on Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. ET, a fall date that sets it apart from the usual February‑to‑June college season. The matchup marks a new chapter for the site that first appeared in the 1989 Kevin Costner classic.

Team Formations and Recent Seasons

Kansas captured the 2025 Big 12 crown, finishing 22‑8 in conference play and 45‑18 overall under coach Dan Fitzgerald. After winning the conference tournament, the Jayhawks hosted an NCAA super‑regional before falling to eventual national champion Oklahoma. Iowa posted a 15‑15 Big Ten record this spring, finishing 33‑23 overall under Rick Heller, and was eliminated in the conference tournament by Purdue. The contrast in recent performance adds competitive tension to the upcoming fall game.

Fall Backdrop and Scheduling Details

Playing in October means the Field of Dreams will likely be surrounded by harvested corn rather than the lush summer fields that greeted MLB’s previous contests. This seasonal shift offers a distinctive visual and a different playing surface for both coaching staffs. The exhibition falls outside the standard college baseball calendar, giving fans a rare chance to see top‑level play in an autumn setting.

Past MLB Appearances and Venue Evolution

The park previously hosted three Major League Baseball games: the New York Yankees versus the Chicago White Sox in 2021 and the Chicago Cubs against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2022. After those events, the site changed hands, underwent a redevelopment that added youth baseball and softball fields, and has since staged high‑school games and senior tournaments. An Iowa Cubs versus St. Paul Saints minor‑league game is slated for Aug. 11, and the Dyersville Dreamers of the Northwoods League will call the facility home beginning next year.

Why It Matters for College Baseball

The Iowa‑Kansas exhibition is the first time a college baseball program has used Field of Dreams for a scheduled game, expanding the field’s prestige beyond its cinematic legacy and recent MLB showcases. For a region roughly 80 miles from the University of Iowa in Iowa City and 400 miles from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, the event will likely draw fans from both states and reignite interest in college baseball in the Midwest. The fall timing, combined with the park’s unique atmosphere, positions the game as a potential tradition that could bridge professional, collegiate, and local baseball communities for years to come.
