Salem Prepares for Sixth Ironman 70.3 Oregon
Salem is set to host the sixth Ironman 70.3 Oregon next month, drawing more than 2,500 athletes and thousands of visitors from across the globe. The three‑day festival kicks off on July 17 with a preview event called Currents to Kicks that starts at Riverfront Park. A family‑focused Ironkids Oregon race follows on July 18, offering a one‑mile run for ages 5‑17, a half‑mile race for ages 3‑8, and a toddler trot for children 1‑3, all beginning at 9 a.m.
Event Overview
The main competition takes place on July 19, with the field assembling at Riverfront Park around 6 a.m. and the finish line expected near the Salem Rotary Amphitheater by about 4 p.m. Competitors will navigate a 1.2‑mile swim in the Willamette River, a 56‑mile bike loop that stretches from South Salem to Ankeny Nature Preserve and returns, and a 13.1‑mile run through Minto‑Brown Island Park. The course design showcases Salem’s natural scenery while challenging athletes with a mix of water, road, and trail segments.
To keep traffic flowing, a series of road closures and lane restrictions are planned for July 19 between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. Drivers traveling between Salem and Independence on River Road South are urged to use alternate routes, with Highway 51 recommended for those heading to or from Independence. The Peter Courtney Pedestrian Bridge linking Riverfront Park and Minto‑Brown Island Park will be shut down to pedestrians on race day.
