Two months after announcing his retirement from pro football, former NFL cornerback Joejuan Williams has detailed his post‑playing career move. The 28‑year‑old will re‑join the New England Patriots, but this time as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. Williams left the field after a brief stint with the Vikings, Bears and Saints, having appeared in 44 career games.

Patriots Journey and Departure

Selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Williams spent his first four seasons with the Patriots. He posted 38 regular‑season and playoff appearances, primarily on special teams, and was not re‑signed as a free agent in 2023. From Field to Classroom

Coaching Roots Begin at Vanderbilt

Williams jumped straight into coaching after stepping away from the game, first accepting an assistant role at his alma mater Vanderbilt. He recounted a conversation with the cornerbacks coach: “I ran into my corners coach at Vandy one day. I was telling him, ‘Hey, I plan on coaching probably the ’27 season,’ and he was like, ‘Nah, come in now,’” he later told commanders.com. “I came in, showed up ever since and it was just natural, being in the room, talking to the guys, teaching them.”

Bill Walsh Fellowship and New England Assignment

Following his stint at Vanderbilt, Williams joined the Washington Commanders as a Bill Walsh fellow, spending two weeks at their minicamp. He will now continue his development by working with the New England Patriots coaching staff under the same fellowship. The Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship aims to broaden representation in NFL coaching ranks.

Williams’ return to New England marks the first time a former Patriot player has entered the Bill Walsh program with the same franchise. The Patriots will open 2026 training camp on Saturday, July 25, giving him a clear timeline to implement what he learned in Washington. This placement also aligns with the team’s focus on internal development.
