Josef Newgarden Shows Up at Nashville Guitar Trophy Event
Trophy Presentation
Josef Newgarden, a Hendersonville native, arrived on July 9 on crutches and in a walking boot for the Gibson Les Paul trophy unveiling at Gibson Guitar Garage in Nashville. The Borchetta Bourbon‑backed Music City Grand Prix featured Scott Borchetta handing out the guitar while IndyCar officials Anne Fischgrund and Dave Furst addressed the audience. The Team Penske driver later confirmed he is the defending champion for the July 19 race at Nashville Superspeedway. (Gallery from the ceremony follows.)
Injury & Recent Results
Newgarden’s foot injury, sustained in a May 24 crash at the 2026 Indianapolis 500, keeps him in a walking boot and on crutches. He has remained tight‑lipped about the injury, telling reporters, “I’m keeping the foot stuff close to (the vest) right now. But everything’s been good.” Despite the setbacks, his recent results include a 10th‑place finish at Detroit on May 31, a dominant win at the Grand Prix of Illinois on June 7, a 22nd at Road America, and a ninth at Mid‑Ohio on July 5.
Season Standings & Highlights
Before the injury, Newgarden captured the second race of the season at Phoenix on March 7, cementing his status as a two‑time IndyCar champion. He sits sixth in the points standings with 270 points, while Alex Palou leads the field with 404 points. The Team Penske driver’s performance this year remains a key factor in the championship hunt.
