Kooij Takes Stage 5 As Traeen Retains Yellow Jersey
Sprint Finish
Olav Kooij claimed the fifth stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday, out‑sprinting German Max Kanter and Belgian Tim Merlier at the line in Pau. The Decathlon CMA CGM rider was positioned for the attack by his teammates and crossed the finish in just under three and a half hours. The 158.3‑kilometer route from Lannemezan to Pau was designed for sprinters after earlier stages featured a team time trial, mountain climbs, and extreme heat. With no major breakaway groups forming, the peloton largely conserved energy, setting up a clean sprint battle.
Yellow Jersey Stays
Norwegian rider Torstein Traeen kept the yellow jersey, finishing 14 seconds behind the main group that included defending champion Tadej Pogacar and two‑time winner Jonas Vingegaard. Traeen, who seized the leading vest on Stage 4, holds about an eight‑minute advantage but is not viewed as a contender for overall victory. His Uno‑X Mobility squad benefited from the flat stage, avoiding the chase necessary on breakaway days. The easy conditions allowed Pogacar and Vingegaard to save strength for the high‑altitude Pyrenees ahead.
Tourmalet’s Challenge
Stage 6 kicks off on Thursday with a 186.2‑kilometer odyssey that begins with two moderate climbs before the Category 1 Col d’Aspin. The infamous Col du Tourmalet follows, a 17.1‑kilometer ascent rated Hors Catégorie, the hardest class in the Tour. The stage ends with an 18.7‑kilometer Category 2 climb to the finish at Gavarnie‑Gèdre, setting up a potential duel between Pogacar and Vingegaard. History shows Pogacar launching early attacks on such climbs, but Vingegaard has surprised rivals before.
What Lies Ahead
Traeen’s yellow jersey could slip on the demanding Pyrenees, especially with Pogacar and Vingegaard expected to clash in the uphill battles. The contrast between the easy sprint of Stage 5 and the rugged terrain of Stage 6 highlights the Tour’s dramatic shift from preservation to aggression. As the race moves into mountainous territory, every second gained or lost will matter more than ever. The Tour’s fans will watch closely as the contenders test each other’s stamina on the legendary climbs.
