Luke Ronchi Quits NZ, Heads to Melbourne Renegades
Coaching Shift to Australia
NZ Cricket announced that batting coach Luke Ronchi will step down later this year after accepting the head coach role with Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s Big Bash League. The 45‑year‑old will remain with the Black Caps through their home multi‑format series against India, which finishes early December, before joining the Renegades ahead of the next BBL season.
Ronchi replaces former teammate Cameron White, who has moved to coach Melbourne Stars. The former Australia and New Zealand wicketkeeper‑batter is already working with Renegades high‑performance manager Clint McKay to assemble a coaching staff and prepare the squad once player contracting resumes later this month.
Legacy with the Black Caps
The departure marks the end of a six‑year spell that counted among New Zealand’s most successful periods. During that time the Black Caps lifted the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021, reached the T20 World Cup final in 2021 and 2026, and were runners‑up in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Ronchi also oversaw historic series wins in India – a 3‑0 Test sweep and ODI victories in 2024 and 2026 – and a recent Test triumph in England.
What’s Next for New Zealand
Ronchi’s work with the batting group earned him widespread respect, helping the top order stay competitive across all three formats. He described coaching New Zealand as one of the highlights of his career and expressed gratitude for the players and fellow coaches. “It has always been my goal to help this team and the batters perform at the highest level,” he said. He added that he will watch closely and wish the side the best for the future.
New Zealand Cricket has confirmed that the process of appointing Ronchi’s successor is already underway, with a replacement expected to be announced shortly. The vacancy presents a chance for a new coach to build on the recent run of results.
Meanwhile, the Melbourne Renegades will look to Ronchi’s BBL experience to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
