Maddix Simpson Adds Depth to Vanderbilt Baseball

Commitment announced

Transfer third baseman Maddix Simpson revealed his decision to join Vanderbilt baseball via social media on July 10. The Ohio State product will bring his experience to the Commodores for the 2027 season. Simpson becomes the ninth transfer added by the program this cycle.

2026 season numbers

In his final year with Ohio State, Simpson batted .283 and collected eight doubles and four home runs. He kept his strikeout rate below 15 percent, establishing himself as a contact‑oriented hitter. Those performances made him an attractive pick for Vanderbilt’s roster needs.

Defensive credentials

Simpson logged most of his playing time at third base as a sophomore in 2026, after also seeing action at shortstop in 14 games the previous season. Defensive metrics from D1Baseball rank him as an above‑average defender at both positions. His two‑way versatility adds depth to a Commodores infield that already features SEC‑caliber starters.

Fit within Vanderbilt’s plans

Vanderbilt returns solid starters at shortstop in Ryker Waite and at third base in Brodie Johnston, both of whom are considered among the conference’s best. Simpson is expected to serve as a depth piece, providing experience and competition for those roles. Coach Tim Corbin’s Commodores will look to the transfer portal additions to fill gaps as they target a strong 2027 campaign.

Other 2026 portal signees

The Commodores have already secured eight other transfers, including position players Blaize Ward, Hunter Ray, Niko Brini, Matt Conte and Bud Coombs. Pitchers Shane Brinham, Gavin Lauridsen and Dominic Monaco also joined the squad. Together, these newcomers form a core of experienced talent that could boost Vanderbilt’s depth and competitiveness.
