Maddy Cusack Inquest Halted as Evidence Deadline Looms

Maddy Cusack Inquest Adjudged to December

Tragic Death and Initial Inquiry

Former Sheffield United footballer Maddy Cusack, aged 27, was found unconscious by her father David at their home in Horsley, Derbyshire, on 20 September 2023. She was pronounced dead the same day, prompting an immediate coroner’s investigation. The inquest opened at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court on 29 June and was originally slated to finish on 27 July. Assistant coroner Sophie Cartwright KC apologized to the family for the delay and adjourned the hearing until 7 December.

The postponement was ordered to give Sheffield United time to search for documents linked to Cusack’s medical records. The family had already submitted a written complaint to the club in the weeks following her death, alleging problems stemming from her working relationship with coach Jonathan Morgan. The mother, Deborah, described Morgan as her daughter’s “nemesis” and claimed he made weight‑related comments intended to “cut her down to size” and “be in control.”

Player Voices and Coach’s Side

Grace Riglar, a teammate and Cusack’s romantic partner, told the court that Cusack had been “anxious” about Morgan joining Sheffield United after a prior experience with him at Leicester City. Coach Morgan testified that he had no concerns about his bond with Cusack when he arrived as manager and offered her a full‑time contract. He said he was “really happy” to have her on his team.

However, Morgan told the Football Association that Cusack was “generally a liar,” accusing her of omitting information about his conduct. He added that he had previously released the player when he coached at Leicester City, and he insisted he had no reservations about working with her at Sheffield United.

Medical Records Controversy

Inquest proceedings were halted again when Cartwright indicated the need for more details about Cusack’s health data. Sheffield United will be asked to review Microsoft Teams folders and Google Drive files for any information concerning the player and to audit her health records on the club’s system in the months before her death. Dr Subhasis Basu, the club’s doctor, had earlier confirmed that Cusack’s medical records from her time at the club were missing.

The coroner said she would recall several witnesses, including Dr Basu, team physio Francesca Carr, and possibly Deborah Cusack, to provide further evidence. Once the hearing resumes, it is expected to last about five days. Cartwright expressed genuine regret for the long wait the family has endured.

What Happens Next

The adjourned inquest will resume on 7 December, giving the coroner time to gather the requested documentation and additional testimony. Interested parties can follow updates on BBC Radio Derby, Facebook, X, and Instagram, or send story ideas to [email protected] or via WhatsApp. The case continues to raise questions about player welfare and the club’s handling of medical and disciplinary matters.
