Maddy Cusack Inquest Hears Coach Called Her a Liar
Coach Jonathan Morgan’s testimony
Jonathan Morgan, who coached Maddy Cusack from February 2023 at Sheffield United, gave evidence at the Chesterfield Coroner’s Court inquest. He described Cusack as “generally a liar” in an account he provided to the Football Association. Morgan said she omitted details about their relationship when speaking to family. He also said he never shouted at Cusack during her time at either Leicester City or Sheffield United.
Morgan disclosed Cusack’s relationship with teammate Grace Riglar to the whole squad at his request. He later joked about the pair at the training pitch, prompting laughter and a reciprocal comment about his weight. The coach admitted telling Cusack she was “too muscular, too bottom‑heavy” for the sprint work required by his style of play. He adjusted her strength programme and noted her running improved by season’s end. In August 2023 Morgan noticed a change: Cusack seemed “less bubbly, less energetic.” He arranged a meeting on 4 September and contacted the club doctor, voicing concern that “something was bothering Maddy.”
Family and teammate reaction
Maddy Cusack’s mother, Deborah, called Morgan her daughter’s “nemesis,” alleging he made weight‑related comments to “cut her down to size” and maintain control. Grace Riglar, who dated Cusack, said she was anxious about Morgan joining the squad after previous interactions at Leicester City. Former teammate Nina Wilson told the court that Morgan’s conduct left several players feeling “ostracised and isolated.” The inquest heard that Cusack’s death was “definitely preventable,” according to earlier testimony.
Cusack, aged 27, was found unconscious by her father David at their home in Horsley, Derbyshire, on 20 September 2023. She was pronounced dead the same day. The case continues as investigators examine the impact of the coaching environment on her mental health.
What happens next
The inquest is ongoing, with more witnesses expected to appear. Morgan is representing himself during the proceedings. The Football Association is monitoring developments closely. The broader football community is watching to see what safeguards, if any, will be introduced for player‑coach interactions.
