Magic Johnson Names LeBron James His Biggest Lakers Regret

Magic Johnson’s Regret Over LeBron’s Arrival

Johnson’s Unexpected Exit From Executive Role

Magic Johnson is celebrated as one of the greatest Los Angeles Lakers of all time. Over his 13‑season playing career he became a permanent ambassador for the franchise. In 2019 he took on the role of President of Basketball Operations, a move that placed him in charge of recruiting LeBron James. That same year he abruptly stepped down in April, leaving the organization before James’s first campaign with the Lakers began.

How the Decision Shaped the Lakers’ Trajectory

During a chat on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast Johnson confessed a deep regret tied to that departure. “I regret not calling LeBron, telling him I was stepping down. I really regretted that. I owed him.” The comment underscores a missed dialogue that Johnson feels he was obligated to have. He explained that the decision was driven by a wish to avoid tension with Jeanie Buss and to keep control over roster moves, noting that he wanted to fire Luke Walton but could not because of internal resistance. “I’m glad I did it. I just regret not calling him,” he added.

Johnson’s exit handed the reins to Rob Pelinka, who had been groomed as his successor. Under Pelinka the Lakers captured a championship in the 2019‑20 season, delivering the title James had hoped for. However the relationship between Pelinka and James later soured, especially after the controversial Russell Westbrook trade in 2021. That failed acquisition is widely seen as a factor that pushed James to seek a new market for his 24th NBA season.

The “what‑if” debate continues to swirl among fans and analysts. Had Johnson remained at the helm, the roster might have evolved differently, possibly preserving the core for longer. The franchise’s path from 2019 onward could have included more titles or an entirely distinct strategic direction. LeBron’s eventual move away underscores how a single unanswered phone call can reshape a dynasty’s future.
