Maldini Set to Bring Back Buffon
New Role for Buffon
Paolo Maldini, Italy’s technical director, is determined to bring Gianluigi Buffon back into the Azzurri set‑up. According to Gazzetta, the former goalkeeper will be offered a primary role inside Club Italia, the body that oversees Italy’s youth and senior national teams. Buffon resigned in March after Italy’s defeat to Bosnia in the World Cup play‑off final, ending his previous advisory tenure.
The report claims Maldini will reach out to Buffon shortly to discuss the new responsibilities. This appointment marks a significant shift from Buffon’s earlier duties as Italy’s Delegation Chief under Luciano Spalletti and Gennaro Gattuso. The FIGC’s latest move signals a push to integrate veteran experience into the national project.
A Different Mandate Than Before
Buffon’s former position involved representing Italy in diplomatic and logistical matters at major tournaments. The new offer from the FIGC points to a distinct function that goes beyond the delegation role he held previously. Gazzetta adds that the contact from Maldini could happen as early as next week, sealing the arrangement.
This potential reunion sits alongside Maldini’s broader restructuring plan, which also includes former Milan teammate Leonardo acting as an adviser. The technical director’s vision leans heavily on seasoned figures who have already served the national team.
Pirlo Favoured for Coach Role
Andrea Pirlo, the 2006 World Cup winner who once partnered Buffon on the field, remains the favourite to take charge of the new Nazionale coach role. The FIGC officially confirmed Maldini’s appointment as technical director last Saturday, reinforcing the club’s confidence in his selections. With Pirlo and Buffon both linked to the project, Italy’s hierarchy appears focused on rebuilding around proven veterans.
