Derek Lalonde Fired by Toronto Maple Leafs
Lalonde’s Dismissal and New Maple Leafs Coaching Staff
Former Detroit Red Wings mentor Derek Lalonde was let go by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, ending a brief tenure with the club. He and former University of Michigan defenseman Mike Van Ryn were removed from their assistant coaching roles. The Maple Leafs announced a revamped staff led by former Red Wings forward Daniel Alfredsson, ex‑Northern Michigan defenseman Brad Werenka and former Oakland Grizzlies bench boss John Gruden. The changes signal a new direction for Toronto’s coaching philosophy as the franchise looks to rebuild its identity.
Coaching Timeline and Key Statistics
Lalonde joined Craig Berube’s staff in June 2025, returning to the NHL just over five months after his dismissal from Detroit. He was hired by the Red Wings at the start of the 2022‑23 season and posted an 89‑86‑23 record across two campaigns, ultimately missing the playoffs. On December 26, 2024, the Red Wings replaced him with Todd McLellan, marking the end of his two‑year stretch in Detroit. Meanwhile, Berube himself was succeeded last month by former Red Wings defenseman and assistant coach Jim Hiller.
Previous Success and International Experience
Before his stint with Detroit, Lalonde served as an assistant under Jon Cooper in Tampa Bay, contributing to back‑to‑back Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021. That experience showcased his ability to develop winning cultures at the highest level. On the international stage, he worked as an assistant for the United States men’s team at the IIHF World Championships in both 2023 and 2024, helping the Americans secure podium finishes. His résumé now includes two Cup rings, multiple World Championship appearances and a blend of NHL and international coaching exposure.
