Kirby Smart’s Photo Pitch Falls Short as Markus Fakatou Joins Ohio State
Smart’s Photo‑Station Pitch
During a June 21 video blog, Georgia coach Kirby Smart showcased his “photo stations” to defensive tackle Markus Fakatou, trying to out‑shine the competition. Smart boasted, “I was asking them at Ohio State how many stations [they have], they only have one. We have four. Typically, we have 14 kids on a visit.” Despite the personal touch, the five‑star prospect walked away committed elsewhere.
Fakatou’s Commitment and Recruiting Profile
Fakatou shared a series of Instagram photos from his Georgia visit on June 4, later recalling that the Bulldogs’ phone‑booth and retro‑desk station was his favorite. He also posted images from his Ohio State trip, including a classroom setup and shots against red and black backdrops. On June 29 he verbally pledged to the Buckeyes, earning a spot as the second‑highest ranked defensive lineman in the 2027 class according to 247Sports composite rankings. Fakatou announced his choice live on Rivals’ YouTube channel, choosing Ohio State over Georgia and Texas, and he will reclassify from the 2028 to the 2027 class after transferring to Sierra Canyon High School from Orange Lutheran in Southern California.
Why Photo Stations Matter in Modern Recruiting
Photo stations have become a staple for programs seeking to leave a lasting impression on elite prospects. By offering individualized backdrop options, schools aim to capture marketable content that recruits can share with family and recruiters, shaping the narrative of a campus visit. Georgia’s emphasis on a nostalgic, full‑set‑up station reflects a broader trend of blending tradition with modern marketing, while Ohio State’s multi‑station approach underscores the competitive arms race among Power‑Five conferences.
What This Means for Georgia and Ohio State
The loss of a top‑ranked defensive tackle is a blow to Georgia’s 2027 recruiting class, especially as the SEC continues to vie for elite interior linemen. Ohio State’s ability to secure Fakatou bolsters its defensive depth and signals that even a well‑crafted photo pitch can be outweighed by a prospect’s overall fit and program reputation. Both schools will likely adjust their recruiting tactics in response to this high‑profile commitment.

Smart’s elaborate photo setup failed to lock in Fakatou, who now adds his elite pass‑rush talent to Ohio State’s defensive line. The Buckeyes’ recruiting engine once again proved it can convert creative pitches into tangible commitments, while Georgia watches the class diminish. The battle for top defensive talent will continue to feature these innovative photo‑station strategies, as both sides refine their approaches for the next recruiting cycle.
