Mike Martin Joins Michigan Basketball Staff
After 14 years as Brown’s head coach, Mike Martin is coming to Michigan to be an assistant on Mike Boyonton Jr.’s staff.
Boynton’s Quick Staff Overhaul
Mike Boynton Jr. wasted little time reshaping his coaching staff after taking the reins at Michigan. He secured a two‑year deal and officially shed the interim tag following Dusty May’s move to the NBA. The first notable addition is longtime Brown head coach Mike Martin, signaling Boynton’s intent to bring veteran expertise to Ann Arbor.
Martin’s College Journey
Mike Martin spent his entire playing career at Brown, starring as a four‑year guard from 2000‑04. His coaching path began with a single season as an assistant at his alma mater before six years on the bench at Penn. He returned to Brown as head coach in 2012, making him the fourth‑youngest leader in Division I at age 29.
Over 14 years, Martin compiled a 171‑202 record, leading the Bears to two postseason tournaments and finishing in the top half of the Ivy League five times. His breakout campaign came in 2018‑19, when he posted the program’s first 20‑win season and its inaugural postseason victory, earning Ivy League Coach of the Year honors.
What Martin Brings to Michigan
Boynton described Martin as an “outstanding coach, exceptional teacher and one of the best recruiters in the game,” noting his deep investment in athletes. Martin highlighted Michigan’s championship culture, elite personnel and unwavering commitment to excellence as major draws. He aims to help build on the program’s recent successes while fostering player development.
Future Staff Changes
Martin is the first new face on Boynton’s staff, but more hires are expected. Justin Joyner departed to become Oregon State’s head coach, and Drew Williamson joined the Dallas Mavericks after following May’s path. Boynton still has several assistant positions to fill as he continues to assemble his vision for Michigan basketball.
The alignment of experienced leaders like Martin with Boynton’s game plan could reshape the Wolverines’ trajectory in the coming seasons.
