Kevin Guskiewicz Stays at MSU While Batt’s $5M Buyout Holds
Leadership Decision Unfolds
Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz has decided to remain at the institution, reversing his earlier acceptance of the Clemson presidency. The announcement came after the MSU Board of Trustees offered to nearly double his compensation on May 17, and after a public clash with trustees in early May. Coach Tom Izzo voiced frustration about the turmoil, urging the university to keep Guskiewicz. Izzo later praised Guskiewicz’s commitment and highlighted the widespread support among fans, alumni, and donors.
Guskiewicz’s return means the escape clause in J Batt’s contract—originally designed to cut the athletic director’s buyout in half if the president left East Lansing—is now nullified. Batt’s six‑year deal is valued at more than $12.6 million, and his buyout remains set at $5 million. The university did not announce an interim athletic director while Batt transitioned.

Buyout and Contract Details
When Guskiewicz accepted Clemson, the original contract for Batt included a clause that would have halved his $5 million severance if the president left. With Guskiewicz’s return, that clause is effectively removed, keeping the buyout at the full amount. Batt’s base salary was $1.85 million in his first year, with a $100,000 raise slated for July 1 and a projected top base of $2.35 million by the contract’s final season. Additional performance bonuses were also built into the deal.
Kentucky has matched Batt with a six‑year agreement that reportedly pays him close to $3 million annually. The Wildcats’ president, Eli Capilouto, confirmed Batt’s commitment on Monday afternoon, noting the family’s excitement about joining the Big Blue Nation. Batt’s departure leaves a vacancy at MSU that the university has not yet filled, indicating a period of uncertainty for the athletic department.

Impact on MSU Athletics
The sudden reversal solidifies the athletic program’s stability, allowing MSU to focus on recruiting and on‑court performance. Coach Izzo emphasized the mood of unity among fans and alumni, suggesting the university can now move forward without internal disruption. The lack of an interim AD may be temporary, as the school searches for a candidate who can navigate the new financial landscape created by Batt’s impending departure. Spartans fans will watch closely to see how the transition influences the basketball squad’s pursuit of a championship.
Batt’s departure creates a strategic opportunity for Kentucky to bolster its athletic leadership, while MSU must address the void left in the athletic department. The university’s commitment to staying competitive was underscored by the recent launch of the Spartan Ventures project, which aims to enhance resources across sports. Moving forward, Michigan State will likely prioritize a smooth handover to preserve its competitive edge and maintain donor confidence.
Kentucky’s Acquisition
Upon learning of Batt’s move, Kentucky President Eli Capilouto publicly welcomed him, indicating the Wildcats are finalizing logistics for his start date. The six‑year, $3 million‑per‑year contract positions Kentucky to potentially accelerate its athletic initiatives. While MSU grapples with the transition, Kentucky’s roster strengthening could have ripple effects across the Big 12 and beyond. Fans on both sides are watching how these leadership shifts will play out in the coming seasons.
