Newcastle United Target SC Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi
Newcastle’s Midfield Revamp After Tonali’s Departure
Newcastle United have been aggressive in the transfer market this summer, looking to refresh Eddie Howe’s squad. The recent big‑money move of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur leaves a void in the heart of Newcastle’s midfield. To address the gap, the Magpies are now scouting Bundesliga talent.
Why Manzambi Is the Primary Target
SC Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi has emerged as a top priority for Newcastle. The 22‑year‑old impressed with seven goals and nine assists across 47 matches for Freiburg, helping the club secure a Europa Conference League spot by finishing seventh. Manzambi carried that form to the World Cup, where he scored three goals and added two assists for Switzerland in the round of 32.
His versatility—operating in both attacking and midfield roles—has made him one of the most sought‑after young players in Germany. Clubs across Europe have taken notice, but Newcastle’s interest is especially strong. The Swiss talent’s performances have already drawn comparisons to other elite midfielders.
Freiburg’s Valuation and Negotiation Status
Freiburg has made it clear that any move for Manzambi will require a bid of roughly €60 million (£51.2 m). At present, no formal negotiations have begun, and there is no agreement in place between the clubs. Newcastle’s directors know they must meet the German side’s valuation to bring the player to St James’s Park.
Despite the high asking price, Manzambi’s age and potential make him an attractive investment for a club looking to build for the future. The Magpies are prepared to work through the summer window to satisfy Freiburg’s demands.
Backup Option: Angelo Stiller
While Manzambi remains the primary target, Newcastle are also monitoring VfB Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller. The German midfielder has a release clause of around €36.5 m (£31 m), which could make him a more affordable alternative. Real Madrid’s interest in Stiller adds competitive pressure, but Newcastle see value in his skill set.
Securing Stiller would provide depth without the steep price tag attached to Manzambi. Either acquisition would bolster Newcastle’s midfield options heading into the new season.
Looking Ahead
The summer window remains active, and Newcastle United are positioning themselves for a competitive squad. Whether they secure Manzambi, Stiller, or both, the club aims to fill the void left by Tonali’s departure and strengthen their chances in domestic and European competitions.
