Joe Fields Sets Up NMSU for Success Off and On the Field
First Ten Months of Change
Joe Fields has been working more than the usual 40‑hour week for the past 10 months, effectively “stealing” extra time to push NMSU’s athletic program forward. At an “Aggies in Albuquerque” gathering held at D.H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro in Old Town, he reported that fundraising has surged by roughly $300,000 compared with last year’s figures. The increased donor interest is helping the university lay a stronger financial foundation for future growth.
Fields, who arrived in September after stints at Tulsa and Texas A&M, described his strategy as covering “12 months of ground in 10 months.” He emphasized that the groundwork being laid now will soon need to translate into victories on the court and the field. “We’re ready to see the fruits of that labor come to life this season,” he told supporters.
Revenue Share Overhaul
Until last season, NMSU’s revenue distribution was uneven: football sat at the bottom of Conference USA, while men’s basketball was described as competitive and women’s basketball hovered in the middle. Fields says the department will now bring every program into the top half of the league’s revenue sharing pool. He noted that “we were trailing, we didn’t have a chance,” but now the team is “in the fight right now.”
Improved revenue pools are tied to better player benefits and a restructured athletic department, according to Fields. Coaches report that they can now recruit top talent because the financial resources match the ambitions. The higher expectations are being embraced across the board, creating a more competitive environment for athletes.
Major Facility Projects
A $18.2 million press box renovation is slated to begin soon, with the state legislature allocating $9 million spread over three years. The work is expected to wrap up by the start of the 2027 season, and a contractor will be selected in the coming weeks. In addition, Fields plans to upgrade locker rooms, a move that could improve NMSU’s standing in future conference realignment talks.
These facility upgrades are part of a broader effort to eliminate “hurdles” that have historically limited the program’s recruiting appeal. By modernizing the athletic environment, the university hopes to become more attractive to prospective student‑athletes and conference partners alike.
Winning Mindset Takes Center Stage
Fields repeatedly stressed that the next step after financial and physical improvements is a shift to a “winning mindset.” He told the crowd that coaches and staff are now focused on bringing championships to NMSU. “We got to win championships, and that’s really important as we move forward,” he added.
Success on the field will be measured by the conference standings. Fields made it clear that staying in Conference USA requires actually winning the league title. Even if immediate results are slow, he vowed, “We’re not gonna budge,” confident that the process and the people are in place to eventually deliver results.
The combination of boosted fundraising, revamped revenue sharing, and upgraded facilities positions the Aggies to compete more fiercely in the coming seasons. With Fields steering the department through a demanding first year, the stage is set for on‑field performance to match the off‑field progress. Fans and alumni are watching closely, ready to see whether the new foundation will translate into conference‑leading victories.
