Ian Nolan Named New RFL Chief Executive
New Leadership for the Rugby Football League
Ian Nolan has taken over as the new chief executive of the Rugby Football League, stepping into a role that will officially begin on 1 October. The 44‑year‑old brings a pedigree of experience from elite organisations, having previously worked at Manchester United and Science in Sport. RFL chair Nigel Wood described him as the best‑placed candidate to guide the game forward during a critical period. The appointment follows a period of interim leadership that has seen two short‑term executives in the chair.
Leadership Transition Timeline
Tony Sutton vacated the chief executive seat last September, prompting a series of interim appointments. Abi Ekoku initially filled the vacancy, but she stepped down in April to become CEO at St Helens after Mike Rush departed in February. Rhodri Jones then assumed the role on an interim basis while also serving as managing director of RL Commercial. Jones will remain in place until Nolan’s arrival later this year, providing continuity during the handover.
Nolan’s Professional Background
Before joining the RFL, Nolan held senior positions at Manchester United and Science in Sport, roles that have shaped his leadership profile. At 44, he is the newest top‑level executive in British rugby, bringing a youthful perspective to the governing body. The timing of his start coincides with a notable recent event: the Magic WKND festival attracted more than 80,000 fans and showcased the sport’s growing appeal. Wood highlighted the recent success as a reason to be optimistic for the future under Nolan’s stewardship.
