Toshiaki Fushimi Dies After Matsusaka Keirin Crash

Crash Details and Fatalities

The 50‑year‑old former Olympic cyclist suffered catastrophic injuries during a race at the Matsusaka Keirin in Mie Prefecture on Saturday. While racing from the back of the pack, he attempted to dodge a pile‑up of riders and veered into the safety barrier, fracturing his cervical vertebrae and skull. He was taken to hospital and passed away at 10.15 am on Sunday.

Japan Keirin Association (JKA) chairman Hiroshi Kido called the loss “truly heartbreaking” and pledged to review safety procedures. The governing body said it will “reconfirm our safety measures and thoroughly ensure fair and safe races.” The incident has prompted an immediate look‑back at track safeguards.

Fushimi earned Olympic silver in the team sprint at Athens 2004, teaming with Tomohiro Nagatsuka and Masaki Inoue. That medal remains a hallmark of his career and is still cited by Japanese cycling fans.
