Skip Johnson Hires Son Tyler as OU Baseball Assistant
Johnson’s New Assistant
Following a national championship run, Oklahoma baseball is expanding its coaching staff with a family addition. Coach Skip Johnson has brought his son, Tyler, onto the Sooners’ payroll as an assistant coach, a move reported by D1Baseball on Thursday night. The hiring adds a familiar face to the program just weeks after the team lifted the title at Kimrey Family Stadium.
Tyler Johnson comes to Norman with a solid recruiting résumé. He spent the past season as Dallas Baptist’s recruiting coordinator and assistant coach, after serving as head coach at McLennan Community College. During his six years at McLennan, 44 players earned all‑conference honors and seven were selected in the MLB Draft.
His most recent success includes guiding the Patriots to five All‑Conference USA selections in a single year. Johnson’s experience also includes earlier stints as an assistant at the same junior college. The addition signals Johnson’s intent to keep a strong recruiting pipeline while leveraging his son’s proven track record.
Coaches around the SEC are shuffling staff this offseason. Just after the OU celebration ended on June 24, former Sooners player Todd Butler moved to Florida as recruiting coordinator. Johnson’s pedigree in recruiting positions the Sooners well for the 2027 season, giving them an extra recruiter who already knows the transfer landscape.
While hiring family members can spark debate, Tyler’s time at the college level suggests he brings tangible development skills. The Sooners will look to him to help sustain the momentum from the 2026 College World Series run, and his work with elite prospects could prove vital in recruiting the next class.
