New Assistant Coach Brings Recruiting Experience

Coach Skip Johnson has expanded the Oklahoma baseball staff by hiring his son, Tyler Johnson, to an assistant coaching role. The announcement came Thursday night when D1Baseball reported the addition. Tyler brings a résumé that includes recent work as recruiting coordinator and assistant at Dallas Baptist.

Tyler Johnson’s most recent stop was Dallas Baptist, where he served as recruiting coordinator and assistant coach. Prior to that, he held the head coaching job at McLennan Community College, where he had also previously been an assistant. Over six seasons at McLennan, he guided 44 players to all‑conference honors and saw seven of them selected in the MLB Draft.

Success on the Field under Johnson’s Guidance

Johnson’s tenure at McLennan was highlighted by a single season in which he helped develop five All‑Conference USA selections. His ability to identify talent is a key reason why Skip Johnson believes the recruiting pipeline will strengthen at Norman. The younger Johnson’s background is expected to complement the program’s existing recruiting efforts.

Other staffing changes were announced shortly after the Sooners’ national championship celebration at Kimrey Family Stadium ended on June 24. Todd Butler, who had been Oklahoma’s recruiting coordinator and a former player, left to take the same role at Florida. Skip Johnson’s reputation for solid recruiting is expected to grow with the addition of his son to the staff.
