Providence Friars host youth basketball clinic
Community clinic highlights
Providence’s men’s and women’s squads kicked off Friday morning with sunrise workouts before heading to Fargnoli Park. The park became the scene of a free youth basketball clinic, co‑hosted by the city’s Recreation Department and sponsored by Amica and Coca‑Cola. About 200 area kids participated in offensive and defensive drills, working with Friars players across four courts and the adjacent field.

Team cohesion and leadership
Guard Gavin Hightower praised the chemistry building within the Friars roster. “I’m loving the guys,” Hightower said, noting the camaraderie is thriving as teammates compete daily to improve. He joined Providence after spending a single season with South Florida’s Bulls, having transferred from Arkansas State. Hightower now carries point‑guard responsibilities and aims to guide younger players through the program’s culture.
The former South Florida scorer was part of a team that finished 25‑9 and earned an NCAA Tournament berth under Bryan Hodgson. His familiarity with Hodgson’s system adds depth to the backcourt, complementing prospects like Georgetown transfer Malik Mack and Florida Atlantic transfer Devin Vanterpool. Hightower emphasized that on‑court success is paired with a supportive brotherhood off the court.
Coaching staff focus on recruiting
Head coach Bryan Hodgson, associate head coach Tee Butters, and assistant Alex Harris were absent from Friday’s event. The trio is on the road during the July live period, targeting talent for the upcoming season. Women’s coach Erin Batth also missed the clinic, scouting for her program. Their recruiting trips include the signature Peach Jam on the Nike circuit this weekend.
Emerging prospects for the Friars
- Kyle Delves – Mount Saint Charles point guard, 2028 prospect, already received an offer.
- Malachi Odugbela – St. Andrew’s wing player, 2028 prospect, also on Providence’s radar.
Both newcomers are generating interest from the Big East and other power conferences, signaling a promising pipeline for the Friars. The event underscored the program’s commitment to community outreach while laying the groundwork for future recruiting successes.
