R Ashwin Busts Out of MLC 2026 After Knee Injury

R Ashwin’s brief stint with the San Francisco Unicorns has come to an early end after a right‑knee injury forced him out of the remainder of Major League Cricket 2026. The former India spinner featured only once this season, going wicket‑less while conceding 24 runs across two overs against the Texas Super Kings on June 20. Australian pacer Peter Siddle, who had already been drafted as temporary cover for Xavier Bartlett and Aaron Hardie, will now remain with the Unicorns for the rest of the campaign.

Ashwin released a statement acknowledging the abrupt end to his season, expressing genuine disappointment at the injury’s impact. “I’m disappointed to end the season early, but unfortunately, this injury means that’s the right decision,” he said in a franchise communiqué. He added that he would continue to cheer on his teammates and thanked the organisation for its support. The spin duties at the Unicorns are now being shared among captain Matt Short, rookie wrist‑spinner Anirudh Immanuel and left‑arm finger‑spinner all‑rounder Hassan Khan.

Graham Manou, the Unicorns’ General Manager of Cricket Performance, praised Ashwin’s professional stature and leadership beyond his on‑field contributions. “Losing a player of Ashwin’s quality and stature to a mid‑season injury is naturally disappointing,” Manou noted. He highlighted Ashwin’s impact on team morale and wished him a swift recovery. The departure has reshaped the Unicorns’ bowling plan as they push for a deep playoff run.

Attention now turns to Ashwin’s rehabilitation ahead of his next major assignment: captaining and mentoring the Dublin Guardians in the inaugural European T20 Premier League. He was signed as one of the tournament’s direct overseas picks for a competition slated from August 26 to September 20 across venues in Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands. Since stepping away from international cricket in December 2024 and parting ways with the IPL after the 2025 season, Ashwin has remained active in global T20 leagues. The Unicorns sit atop the MLC points table with 10 points from eight games, having secured five victories, and will next face the Los Angeles Knight Riders and Seattle Orcas.
