Toronto Tempo Apologizes to Angel Reese Over Comment
Incident on the Court
Friday’s contest saw the Toronto Tempo face the Atlanta Dream. With 3:16 left in the fourth quarter, Nyara Sabally was called for a foul after an offensive rebound by Angel Reese. The Tempo lodged a challenge, asserting that Reese had elbowed Sabally in a hostile manner. Sabally exited the game during a timeout as the officials deliberated the call.
Brondello’s Remark Sparks Controversy
While the replay was being reviewed, head coach Sandy Brondello could be heard shouting “Angel, she’s a protected species!” over the arena mic. The comment quickly spread across social media, prompting immediate discussion. Reese responded with a questioning post, tagging Brondello and using a clown emoji, implying a deeper racial meaning. Observers noted the phrase is used in Australian sport to describe players who receive extra official attention, yet Reese interpreted it differently.
Cultural Context and Fan Reactions
In Australian sporting vernacular, “protected species” typically refers to athletes who draw preferential treatment from referees. Some fans highlighted that rugby and other local leagues employ this terminology. However, Reese viewed the comment through a lens of racial sensitivity, feeling it carried unintended bias. The divide between the intended meaning and Reese’s perception fueled the controversy.
Sandy Brondello’s Formal Apology
Brondello issued a public apology, later reposted by the Tempo’s social media team. She opened with the exact words: “Angel, I’m sorry,” and explained that the remark stemmed from frustration with officiating, not a personal attack. “Last night, in the emotion of the moment after Nyara’s injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn’t have used, and I take full responsibility for that. My frustration was with the officiating, but my words unfairly put the focus on you.” She continued: “I also understand that my words carried an impact beyond what I intended, particularly for Black women in our league, and I’m deeply sorry for that.” “I’ve spent my career competing with, coaching and learning from incredible Black women.” “I regret that my words caused hurt to a community I respect so deeply,” Brondello added. “I have a lot of respect for you as both a player and a person, and I sincerely apologize to you, your teammates, and the Dream organization for my comment.”
Reese’s Stand and Game Stats
Reese has not directly replied to Brondello’s apology, but she reposted a tweet from a WNBA reporter praising her for defending herself. She recorded 23 points, 12 rebounds and 3 steals in Friday’s win. The Tempo drops to 10‑15 on the season, while the Dream improves to 15‑10 after the victory. Both teams will meet again on August 10, 2026, with the game slated to stream nationally on Peacock.
Future Showdown
The Tempo has lost each of its three meetings with the Dream this year, leaving the series tied at one win each for the Dream. Their next encounter is booked for August 10, 2026, and will be broadcast on Peacock. Fans can expect another clash as both clubs continue to battle for playoff positioning.
